Your solemnisation is the moment your marriage becomes official — and where you hold it shapes everything about how it looks in photos. The light, the backdrop, the sense of space: a venue that's already beautiful makes gorgeous images almost effortless, while a tricky one asks a lot more of your photographer.

This guide walks through the best types of ROM and solemnisation venues in Singapore for photography, what each one gives you visually, and the practical things to check before you book. Planning yours? Message us on WhatsApp with your date and venue, and we'll help you plan the shots.

First: the ROM building vs an external venue

A quick but important 2026 update. The original Registry of Marriages building at Canning Rise is closed for redevelopment and isn't expected to reopen until around 2029. In the meantime, ROM-site solemnisations and in-person appointments run from an interim location at Esplanade Mall (Level 3), accessible from Esplanade MRT.

The good news: you don't have to solemnise at the ROM site at all. As long as you appoint a licensed solemniser, you can hold your ceremony almost anywhere in Singapore — a garden, a heritage bungalow, a hotel, a rooftop, or a restaurant. The legal weight is identical wherever you sign; what changes is the experience and the photos. (For the full process, see our ROM photography guide.)

1. The ROM / registry site — clean and intimate

A registry-day ceremony is usually small, quick, and understated. Because it's often just the two of you and your witnesses, photography becomes proportionally more important — there are fewer moments, so each one counts.

Photographically: expect a simple, neutral setting. The focus is entirely on your expressions and the signing — close, honest, documentary-style frames rather than grand backdrops. It's a great fit for couples who want something low-key and genuine.

2. Gardens & botanic venues — natural light and greenery

Garden venues are among the most photogenic in Singapore. Lush greenery, soft natural light, and open lawns give a fresh, romantic look with very little styling needed. Gardens by the Bay's Ficus Room, for example, is an official ROM solemnisation site set within the gardens.

Photographically: golden hour (late afternoon) gives the softest, most flattering light for outdoor portraits. The greenery frames you naturally. Watch out for: weather. Always confirm a sheltered indoor backup — Singapore's afternoon showers, especially in the northeast monsoon months, can disrupt an open-air ceremony.

3. Heritage & colonial bungalows — character and charm

Restored black-and-white colonial bungalows — like those around the Wessex Estate — are a favourite for couples who want old-world character. Think mature trees, verandahs, and warm interiors, often with both indoor and outdoor options.

Photographically: the architecture does a lot of work for you. Spiral staircases, timber details, and garden surrounds create varied backdrops within one venue, so your gallery never feels repetitive. Best for: intimate celebrations (many seat 30–80 guests) that want a distinctive, heritage feel.

4. Hotel ballrooms & function rooms — weather-proof and convenient

Hotels are the practical choice, especially if you want your solemnisation and banquet in one place. Guests don't travel between locations, and you're never at the mercy of the weather.

Photographically: consistent, controllable lighting — though some ballrooms can be dim, so it's worth discussing ambient lighting with your venue and photographer in advance. Look for hotels with an outdoor garden, poolside, or lobby feature for portrait variety. Best for: couples combining ceremony and reception, or larger guest lists.

5. Rooftop & skyline venues — dramatic city backdrops

For a modern, urban feel, rooftop venues offer skyline views that almost decorate themselves. A city backdrop needs very little extra styling.

Photographically: stunning at golden hour and blue hour, when the sky and city lights balance beautifully. Watch out for: wind (advise your stylist about hair), heat, and harsh midday sun. Plan portrait timing around the light.

6. Restaurants & intimate private spaces — cosy and personal

Some restaurants and private hourly spaces let the ceremony and the meal share one room, keeping the day small, warm, and relaxed. It's the quiet middle path between a bare registry slot and a full hotel package.

Photographically: intimate and candid — the focus is on people and reactions in a cosy setting. Ask about the room's natural light; window light makes a big difference indoors. Best for: small, personal celebrations with your closest people.

How your venue affects your photos

Whatever you choose, four things drive how your solemnisation photos turn out:

Light — natural window or garden light flatters; dim rooms need a plan. Outdoor venues shine at golden hour.

Backdrop — a venue with built-in character needs less decoration to look beautiful.

Space — room to move means your photographer can find angles instead of being pinned to one corner.

Rain plan — for any outdoor venue, a sheltered backup protects both your ceremony and your photos.

Practical tips before you book

Lock in your venue and solemniser before the paperwork. Popular dates and Justices of the Peace get booked out months ahead, and your filed date must match your booking.

File your Notice of Marriage at least 21 days before your intended date (and within the allowed window).

Visit in person and picture where the ceremony, signing, and portraits will happen.

Always have a Plan B for weather at outdoor venues.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to hold my solemnisation at the ROM building?

=> No. With a licensed solemniser, you can solemnise at almost any venue in Singapore — a garden, bungalow, hotel, rooftop, or restaurant. The marriage is equally legal wherever you sign.

Where is the ROM building located in 2026?

=> The original Canning Rise building is closed for redevelopment. Interim ROM-site solemnisations and appointments are held at Esplanade Mall, Level 3. Always check the official ROM channels for the latest.

Which solemnisation venue is best for photos? Any venue with good natural light and built-in character — gardens, heritage bungalows, and rooftops all photograph beautifully. The "best" one is the setting that feels most like you.

Should I book the venue or file the paperwork first? Secure your venue and solemniser first, then file — because your filed date must match a confirmed booking, and popular slots go quickly.
