The costs, line by line
1. Photography
The shoot itself — coverage, editing, retouching, and deliverables. This is the number most couples anchor on, and it's usually not the largest line on the list.
2. Your flights and accommodation
Two people, return flights, and several nights' stay. Destination shoots are rarely a one-day affair: you need buffer days for arrival, jet lag, weather, and the shoot itself.
3. The photographer's travel
This is the line couples most often miss. If your photographer travels with you, their flights, accommodation, and time are part of your cost. Some studios charge a flat travel fee; others price it into the package.
This is one reason we work differently: we arrange overseas shoots in China through trusted partners already based there, which removes a travelling photographer's airfare and hotel from the equation.
4. Ground transport
Getting between the airport, your accommodation, and each shoot location — often with gowns, suits, and equipment in tow. Multiple locations in one day usually means a hired vehicle.
5. Outfits and styling
Gowns and suits still need sourcing, and destination shoots often call for more looks — a lighter outfit for warm scenery, something warmer for mountains or winter. Add hair and makeup, ideally arranged locally.
6. Permits and location fees
Many heritage sites, parks, and landmarks charge for commercial photography or require a permit booked in advance. These are small individually and add up quietly.
7. Time off work
Not a line on any invoice, but real. A destination shoot typically costs each of you several days of leave — leave you may also need for the wedding itself.
8. The contingency you'll actually use
Weather, delays, an extra night, a location that turns out to be closed. Destination shoots have more moving parts, and more things that can move.
So what's the realistic total?
There's no single number — it swings enormously with destination, season, how long you stay, and whether your photographer travels. But a useful way to think about it:
Photography is often the smallest part of a destination shoot budget. Travel, accommodation, and time are usually the bigger half.
When couples tell us their destination budget "blew out", it's almost never the photography quote. It's the four nights instead of two, the photographer's airfare, and the permits nobody mentioned.
Before you commit, price all eight lines above — not just the shoot. That single exercise changes most couples' plans one way or the other, and it's better to do it now than halfway through booking.

- Option 1 — The real destination shoot. Everything above. You get the trip, the experience, and images that genuinely happened there. If the travel itself is part of what you want, nothing replaces this.
